I will admit to appeal to authority here. Keto Diet Foods: Fats Hi Mea, In general I don’t recommend a cheat meal or day on a keto diet. It takes a few weeks of keto to get fat adapted, and cheat meals just work against this. Some people do cheat meals but it’s not my recommendation. If you miss certain foods, I have lots of recipes for low carb and keto equivalents of desserts, bread, pizza, etc.

Some think a man will die sooner if he eats continually of fat-free meat than if he eats nothing, but this is a belief on which sufficient evidence for a decision has not been gathered in the North. Deaths from rabbit starvation, or from eating of other skinny meat, are rare — for everyone understands the principle, and any possible preventive steps are naturally taken” (36). Though I don’t believe your bottom line is strong enough since you simply stating that the diet is “hard to follow” and food is “notoriously unhealthy” without evidence going deeper into why those “notoriously unhealthy” foods are worse than keeping carbohydrate-heavy food that are addictive and give the body a quick sugar high for energy. I believe “hard to follow” is your opinion only, since acceptable Keto foods are found at all restaurants easily and also all grocery stores. All the foods you mention: “rich in very colorful fruits and vegetables, lean meats, fish, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil, and lots of water” are all Keto-friendly. Many people have been on a Keto-diet for years. A healthy lifestyle is a healthy mindset change and making right choices – it’s not going to be easy.

But the author includes a lot of really helpful lists explaining not only what you can eat on the diet but how many carbs are contained in a lot of common foods, from rice to milk to veggies. Because the author is a dietician, it was easy to trust her recommendations throughout the book, and she makes a good effort at explaining the science behind how our bodies metabolize different kinds of foods. There are also lots of good tips for transitioning into the diet, eating out at different types of restaurants, and a handful of yummy-sounding recipes to get you started. I’ve only been trying to eat according to the plan in this book for a few days, and so far it’s not nearly as hard as it was when I tried it fifteen years ago!
